Means “fair flower” from the Greek ev “fair, good” and anthos “flower, blossom”. Derived from the Greek name Euanthe, who is said by some to have been the mother of the Charites by Apollo. Contributing to the popularity of the name in the Western World, Evanthe appears as a character in John Fletcher’s 17th century tragicomedy, A Wife for a Month, and also as a character in Thomas Godfrey’s 18th century romantic tragedy The Prince of Parthia (which was the first play written by an American to be presented in the United States by a professional cast of actors).
