I am thrilled to see Cleopatra on your list! I’ve been insisting I was a Cleopatra instead of a Laura since I was 2!
I think Emiliana is a bit overly frilly, but liveable, I suppose. the only other names I’m not fnd of on a girl here is Rowan. I find it plain, a bit brown, if that makes any sense and for me, quite boyish, even. Could be because I’m a huge Bean fan and Rowan Atkinson comes to mind when I hear Rowan, and
yeah, that’s no image for a girl! :) And then there’s Bronte. too surnamey and ugly sounding to boot. I’d rather name a girl Charlotte, Emily or Anne, myself, even if I loathe Charlotte personally, (all I see is cHARLOTte when I look at it).

Clementine, Beatrix & Cecily are on my own lists. They’re the three most likable names on my list, in fact. Most people looking at my lists, zero in on those three as ‘pretty” and feminine. Hardly anyone likes Maud or Zelda! And Francesca was my Mom! I am so thrilled to be seeing her name around again. Frances is what she went by and Francie was her nickname.

I like Milly but I’m not fond of Millicent. Nothing bad, but my other half is a HUGE Dark Shadows fan and she was a character on there, a bt ditzy. I have Milly from Pomeline, Romilly & Matilda, instead. It’s past the girlchild’s bedtime here, so I’ll take a look at your boys list tomorrow! :D

I think Cleo is so cute as a nn :) I prefer Emilia to Emilana maybe I will change that,I love Rowan on a girl its on hubby and I top names list I never associate it with MrBean although I loved him as a kid!
I don’t know what is is but I like Bronte, I too don’t really like Charlotte, Emily has been way over used here in NZ!
I like Frances too :) I think Francesca is gorgeous :)

I like Bronte too most people seem to dislike it I don’t know why! Charlotte is lovely what did she get nicknamed? I love Lottie! Bronte & Celeste would be nice as sisters :) thanks for stopping by :)
      where abouts are you from?

I think Bronte annoys people because it’s a surname and there’s a cyclops connection: http://www.bronteinsieme.it/BrIns_en/2st_en/origini_en.html Although I see his name more often as Brontes.

The Bronte sisters’ surname originally was the less pleasing Brunty/Branty. It was altered somewhere down the track and retained as the more “distinguished” Brontë. A bit like the Ann Bullen to Ann Boleyn situation.

I’m seeing it more and more in Aussie BAs. With sibs named Jayden and Kodie unfortunately.

Isla has Fleur as another middle name. I love it although people don’t realise it that was found, albeit rarely, way back in medieval England. They just think it’s use stems from John Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga. He certainly breathed new life into it.

I love Olive too. Could not use as first name given I have an Isla but a middle certainly.

    • 10

      babynamelover said,

Oh I didn’t know that about Bronte, I have only meet one. I need to go through those lists and play around with them :) any suggestions?
Uh Jayden is most hated name. Ooh Fleur is gorgeous with Isla what is her other? I may have missed you saying it, if so I’m sorry.

Olive is pretty but lately all I can think of is the oil, I like Livia as opposed to the overused Olivia.

  5. 11

    Bewildertrix said,

Despite being pretty sure that Olive will make a small comeback ( it’s already doing so given I’m seeing it monthly in the Herald), the oil, fruit and Olive Oyl Popeye connection don’t sit well with lots of people. I wouldn’t want it getting to Lily or Ruby (or obviously Olivia) status anyway. I think olive trees are stunningly beautiful and their association with peace and wisdom is a bonus. Wiki says: “The olive is one of the plants most cited in recorded literature”. It’s funny though, I hate eating olives myself!

    Oops, sorry, it’s here .http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GNJ954SzZVs/SO8HSFtRLLI/AAAAAAAAB1g/0G3SU6lPoC0/s1600-h/Isla+birth+cert+crop.jpg

Yes, yes, ridiculously long ;) Forms are no hassle though and unless it’s official stuff, she’s shortened to Isla Scarlet Bonnie any way. I know you hate Bonnie! It’s worked quite well for us using Bonnie so much considering her brother still can’t pronounce Isla right. It’s his Ls. It comes out like Iowa. Technically Isla Scarlet is a double first name, I just hate hyphens.

I think you could mix and match lots of those names and come out with lovely ideas. Saffron, Cicely, Polly, Sally, Imogen are favourites. Oh and Flora. That’s one name I’ve been considering for a couple of years. One minute the margarine reference bothers me, the next it doesn’t. It’s so much more than freaking margarine! Roman flower goddess, people!

      babynamelover said,

I love Ruby trying to win hubby over :) I know I know its so popular, its not sitting in our top 5ish anyway :) I don’t like Olives to eat either.
I am totally over Lily although Lila is quite pretty. Olive has a very cool meaning :)

WOw Isla Scarlet Bonnie Fleur Avril Ophelie- what a mouthful hehe :) but they all flow :) does Conor have as many or just James Rohan?
Tell me all the meanings behind the choices? I don’t like hyphens either. Isla Scarlet is pretty hard to get used to the one t, is the original one t or two? I used to like Adelle two l’s now I like Adele, so i maybe won over :) Flora is beautiful :) I went through a big phase of loving Polly but hubby doesn’t like it. I went to school with a Sally :) I have meet a Saffron at Kindy.

      • 13

        Bewildertrix said,

Just James Rohan. Back in 2005 the thought of using an extra middle name seemed unconventional enough but then realising how many people actually have them, myself included (added another surname at 16, making original surname a middle) I felt better.

Lol, I can do you one better about my intentions. Rather than hog your blog: http://onomastitrix.blogspot.com/2008/06/isla-scarlet-bonnie-fleur-avril-ophlie.html

Because scarlet was a type of medieval woollen cloth, technically Scarlet comes first before Scarlett, which has provenance as an occupational surname denoting those who sold or worked with scarlets. Although back then, nobody would have used either as a first name. It’s funny, scarlets came in different colours, so the colour word we know today was not it’s first designation, it’s just that crimson red scarlet cloth was the most sought after scarlet. It’s confusing. Both were used prior to the novel Gone With the Wind. Very uncommon but used.

I’ve been very interested in nicknames and pet forms as middle names lately. Annie is one I really want to use given it nods to two special people. Polly and Sally are adorable but non in the sense that they are venturing into that silly Dee-Dee, Coco or Bunty territory.

      • 14

        babynamelover said,

Oh what middle name did you add to yours? I don’t mind you hogging my blog lol I like having someone to talk to. Some people pop in now and again but haven’t seen some of them for awhile. OOh so Scarlet isn’t actually a colour thats very interesting!! Thanks for that :)

I have meet two Annie’s lately both Anna’s, a Mum and a Grandma. What would you use for a longer Annabel? Annora?

I like Sally & Polly I think they could be the new Lily & Ruby :P
I like Coco a little lol don’t shoot me :P

    Bewildertrix said,

It’s an awful surname that I’d rather not share ;) More than awful actually but I couldn’t bear to drop it completely either if that makes any sense. I wanted to keep my full birth name so my surname just got bumped back to a middle name spot and I took my mother’s maiden name as my new surname. I was adamant I’d never alter names ever again for anyone because it’s a hassle with old/newdocumentation/records. At one stage there I had a few problems locating old medical records. I’m glad I did it early at 16 though rather than later.

And scarlet’s chief designation is the colour now as the cloth is no longer in the picture. Most people wouldn’t have heard of the cloth and that’s perfectly understandable. I ran across it by chance one day. I preferred the clean look of Scarlet but had no idea as to its real history as a word.

I actually love stand alone Annie and it’s been used as such for a long long time. In saying that Anna, Anne and Annabel are lovely. I’m not so fond of Anneliese but I do like mothballed rarer smushes like Annegret (Anne + Margaret). Annelore and Annelien (-leen) are two others that I find intriguing.

Oh and Anouk is gorgeous. Informal too but lovely.

Who knows about Polly and Sally! Molly is big in England and Ireland. Perhaps Polly et al are the next wave of old fashioned nicknames to make a hit. Obviously filtering down to here and Aus eventually.

Alleece is awful where abouts do you live? Im undecided on Molly, think it is a little cutsey wonder how it translates to a adult. Holly grows better I think.

From your list I LOVE Aurelia, Allegra, Beatrix, Bellamy, Clover, Delilah, Eleanor, Esme, Francesca, Fifi, Hazel, Isobel, Iris, Imogen (my stepsister’s name), Millicent, Marigold, Norah, Octavia, Rowan, Sarai, Seraphine, Soleil, Saffron, Sybella, Violet, Wren, Winifred (and Winnie is a cute nickname) and Zahara. I also love Isla, Frances, Lotte/Lottie, Ruby, Mia, Stella, Dakota, Ava, Memphis and Sadie.

    • 22

      babynamelover said,

Lottie is the best nickname for Charlotte! I prefer Lottie as a stand alone. I love Ruby too but she is so popular :( and hubby is not so keen!
Mia has been so popular here in NZ I have completely gone off it! Our cat is Dakota :) I used to like Ava but have changed to the more uncommon Ada which is equally beautiful to me :) Sadie is cute! Not huge fan of Memphis but I do have a soft spot for Arizona and Washington.

      babynamelover said,

What is your top five girls? :)

  10. 24

    Sophia said,

My top five girls’ names are… Lotte, Clementine (I forgot to add that last time!), Frances, Stella and Isla. I also like Ada, and I like that it sounds very similar to Ava but isn’t nearly as popular. Actually, I only know/know of two Avas (excluding celebrity babies), so I am always surprised when I see how popular it is statistically.

    • 25

      babynamelover said,

I love Ada!! My close friend likes Ava and has thought about using Avalon as a longer version after she had a dream. Clementine is really pretty would you use a nickname I haven’t heard of any before? I find Stella quite harsh sounding but I like Isla has gotten so popular in Australia though judging by the bonds baby search. Frances I like more for a middle I think, seems quite masculine to me although I know the male spelling is Francis. My Grandad who has passed now was Frank so Frances would be honoring.

      • 26

        Sophia said,

I know a little girl called Ada, she has a brother called Monty. Cute sibling names I think. I like Avalon or Avery as longer versions of Ava. Both pretty. If I used Clementine on a future daughter I guess I’d call her Clem for short when she was older and when she was still little maybe just a nickname from her middle name or just an unrelated nickname if you follow what I’m saying. I’m actually quite surprised that I like Stella so much because usually I don’t lean towards names that are so normal, but I just like it inexplicably. Isla is popular in Australia? Apart from Isla Fisher I’ve only heard of one other person here with that name.

      • 27

        babynamelover said,

Ada & Monty is gorgeous! I like Monty! What about Aveline? Clem seems masculine to me I just wondered if there was any feminine nicknames for Clementine?
I don’t think Isla is high on the charts I just saw a heap of them in the Bonds Baby Search which made me think if may jump for 2009 charts.
The Ella names have been so uber popular hopefully they will die down.

      • 28

        Sophia said,

Aveline is quite sweet too. I suppose Clem is quite masculine, but I don’t mind it. I guess Clementine could be shortened to… I actually don’t know. It’s a nice name though so I think it’s fine just as an un-shortened name.
Yes, in general I really don’t like all those Ella/Bella type names, apart from Stella, as you know.

Tiny? My Step-Great Grandmother nn was Tiny I can’t remember he actual name though, oh it was Rose! DO you say it Ave-line or leen?

      • 30

        Sophia said,

Well when I read it I read Ave-line, but I’ve never actually heard it before so I don’t know. Either way is pretty.

Hey – I love your website – very inspiring. I love unusual but simple names. I noticed you had Luna on your list which I really like and had a friend recently name her baby this. While I really love it I can’t help thinking of all the stuff that is associated with moons and lunatic and loony tunes etc. What do you think? I also like Ocean as it sounds really strong and powerful but I don’t know if I could call by own bub that. I guess they are both a little hippy-ish too??

    • 35

      babynamelover said,

Thanks :) I think Luna is lovely and can definitely see it on a wee girl, Ocean I actually like on a boy. I think both are slightly hippy-ish names but what a wonderful way to connect your child to nature :) thanks for stopping by and commenting :)

I love some of these names! Im having a hard time trying to find a name the hubby and I both like. The only name he has picked out is Alice. I love it and think its sweet and classic, but I would rather use it as a middle name. My name is Astrid, so I want my daughter to have a unique and different name. Growing up Ive always loved my name because I wasnt part of the 4 Brittneys and 5 Jennifers in class. I love getting asked about my name, the good and the bad. I just cant find anything Im totally in love with. Help?

My mom is the same way, she picked out my name when she was 13! My mom got Astrid from my grandma. Shes from the Netherlands and its her middle name. So Im open to European names! I picked out my boy’s name when I was about 14, Silas Matthew:) Im so in love with the name Silas and my hubby likes it too. I also like Nole, Declan, Urijah(Ur-eye-ah)(not sure on the spelling), Rowan, Elon(E-lon)(heard this and liked it, not sure on the spelling)!
