Comparing the NZ top 100

The day before I went into labour I had a lot of fun with this! Hope you enjoy these musings too.

I compared the NZ top 100 for 2010 with the Irish, Scottish, American and Welsh & English counterparts and here is what I found!

England & Wales + New Zealand top 100

There are 35 names in the English & Welsh top 100 that don’t feature in the NZ and 39 in the girls. Of the boys 12 were shared in the Scottish top 100, 3 in the Scottish and Irish, 2 in the USA, 1 in the USA, Scottish and Irish which was Evan and 1 in the USA and Scottish.  Of the girls 14 were in the Scottish, 5 in the Scottish & Irish, 3 in all 4 which were Lauren, Julia & Maria, 1 in the USA which was Evelyn and 1 in the USA and Ireland which was Alexandra.

 

Cutsie Names- Evie, Maisie/Maisy, Ellie, Lexi/Lexie, Lacey, Gracie, Rosie, Hollie, Tilly and Libby.

Old fashioned- Florence, Eleanor, Emilia, Isobel, Esme, Martha, Harriet, Evelyn, Eliza and Maryam.

Modern- Tia, Freya, Amelie, Skye, Laila and Aisha.

Traditional- Megan, Erin, Bethany, Lauren, Julia, Niamh, Aimee, Maria, Nicole, Heidi and Alexandra.

3 spellings-Mohammed, Muhammad and Mohammad.

 Feminine ending- Finley/ Finlay, Alfie, Freddie, Jamie, Ollie, Louie, Harvey, Bailey, Bobby, Stanley, Harley & Bradley.

 Modern spelling- Kian & Kieran.

Scottish/Irish- Callum, Owen, Rhys/Reece &  Evan,

Ireland + New Zealand top 100

There are 56 boys’ names in the Irish top 100 that do not make the New Zealand and similar 53 girls’ names this is the most of all the four countries I looked at!

Of the 56 boys 11 were shared with Scotland, 3 with Scotland & USA and 4 with the USA- and for the girls 16 with Scotland, 4 with Scotland & USA and 2 with USA; Natalia and Alexandra.

Irish names: Sean, Conor, Cian, Darragh, Oisin, Patrick/Patryk, Cillian/Killian, Eoin, Fionn, Tadhg, Cathal, Ronan, Ciaran, Eoghan, Rory, Cormac, Dara, Senan, Oran, Shay, Odhran, Niall, Daithi, Lorcan and Daire.
